Food Grade Welding

Stainless Steel Purge Welding

The Issue

Restaurant Brands NZ needed an engineering team that could design and install new pipeworks for an automatic oil pump system. Restaurant Brands were upgrading deep fryers across all KFC stores throughout Christchurch, doing away with manual handling of used oil upon draining. Agnew was engaged to work with their design for a network of pipes that would carry the used oil to a recyclable storage vat outside.

The Action

Agnew Engineering was given the plans and set about making the stainless steel pipeworks to the dimensions required and designing its install process. Agnew are specialists in stainless steel purge welding which is a technique used for food-grade installations. Weld Purging uses inert gas to prevent oxidation on the inside of pipes and seals off sections to prevent contamination during the pipe welding process. Once fabricated, the new food-grade stainless steel piping system was installed within the refurbished kitchens.

The Result

Resulting in a fully automatic system for draining used oil from commercial deep fryers in a busy fast-food environment. Agnew continues to carry out scheduled maintenance on the systems for Restaurant Brands (RB) and carry out similar conversions on other RB brands including Subway and Carl's Jnr.
